Furniture in the bathroom? Who ever heard of such a crazy idea? The bathroom is for, well, you know. That is the response you may have received only a few years ago if you told people you were thinking about putting furniture in the bathroom. But styles and fashions change, and the latest trend in bathrooms it to transform the most functional room into the house into an actual room.
We know it seems a bit strange, but when you think about it, it actually makes perfect sense. Other than the living room or the kitchen, the bathroom is the room people spend the most time in. Whether we are talking about bathing or showering or getting ready in the morning or simply relieving yourself, it is likely that you spend at least an hour a day in the lavatory. Why not make it a more welcoming, relaxing and inviting place, rather than simply a functional one?
That is the idea behind bathroom furniture, which has become a popular, unexpected trend in bathroom decorating and design. Of course, the type of furniture that can be used in bathrooms is rather limited. You probably won't encounter a canopy bed when you use the toilet at a friend's. But still, you may be surprised by what you find.
The history of furniture in the bathroom in modern times probably begins with the wood vanity. After all, what is a vanity but a set up drawers and cabinets for extra storage space? And because many of them are made out of wood, well, isn't that furniture? It wasn't long after the wood vanity began popular that people started finding other pieces of furniture that would complement large bathrooms.
As you might expect, the most popular early pieces were merely functional. Devices like space savers could hardly be called furniture, as they were merely cheap freestanding structures that could store a few extra towels on their shelves. But after these space saves came more substantial and decorative pieces like bathroom cabinets, which often look like cabinets in any other room in the home, except that they are in the bathroom. Large wooden wall cabinets are also quite popular and can be used to store things like washcloths, extra shampoo and soap.
For homeowners who have huge, commodious master bathrooms, it may be necessary to do some extra shopping. It is not at all uncommon to fight love seats, chairs and even rugs in large bathrooms, though none of them were designed for that purpose. One popular piece of furniture that was designed specifically for large bathrooms is a vanity table set. This set ordinarily consists of a table, a chair or bench and a mirror. Typically, this is where the lady of the house will sit to apply her makeup, do her hair, or simply to get ready for the day.
Though it is a fairly new idea in decorating, bathroom furniture can turn any cold, functional bathroom into a warm and welcoming place that you won't want to leave in the morning and will long to come home to at night.
